Mitch Bedke

Mitch grew up in San Diego, the son of a painter, studied at the University of Utah, and worked as a graphic designer in his father's advertising agency before settling in Park City in the late 1980s and raising two sons here.

In 2010 he took a glass fusing class at the Kimball Art Center and did not stop. Fusing led to slumping, slumping to painting with enamels, and then to kiln casting large sculpture, which is what most of the studio time goes on now. He has since studied at the Pilchuck Glass School under the master glass artist Narcissus Quagliata — thirteen students taken from around six hundred applicants.

The subjects come from outside. Trout and sardines, Buddha heads, and more recently the ridgelines of the Wasatch cast in glass from molds he builds himself. The backcountry trips are research.

Glass is not the only thing in the workshop. Mitch also carves linocut blocks and pulls prints, welds and blacksmiths, paints, and shoots photographs. He is the president of the Park City Artists Association.
